Marc Chagall

Marc Chagall was one of the most famous painters of his time when he was commissioned by Andre Malraux and Georges Pompidou to paint the ceiling of the Palais Garnier Opera House in Paris. It was a huge commission which was brilliantly executed. Our lithograph shows the ceiling of the opera - but on a more modest scale. It illustrated a book by Jacques Lassaigne called “Le Plafond de L’Opera, Paris” . The Palais Garnier Opera House was built in the late 19th century and is a world wide known landmark. In the magnificent Concert Hall in red and gold the ceiling by Chagall with its bright and fragrant colours stands out as a wonderful spectacle.
